Art on the Street

Art on the StreetCall to Artists


The Meridian Downtown Business Owners’ Association (MDBA) seeks proposals of two-dimensional artwork to be completed by the artist(s) on the roadway in designated 4’ x 9’ sections along Idaho Avenue, in downtown Meridian, between Main Street and 2nd Street, on Saturday, September 16, 2017 (see diagram). Artists may submit proposals as individuals or in groups of up to four people. Paint in black, white, and primary colors will be supplied for the artists’ use (covered by the entry fee). Artists will be allowed to mix the colors provided, and additional colors may be purchased from Rodda Paint at a reduced cost up to one-week prior to the event if necessary. No outside paint may be used, as the type of material has been approved in advance by the Ada County Highway District (ACHD). Date may be subject to change as needed/required by the MDBA ensuring the proper permitting.


Art on the Street will be comprised of original artwork by artists who live or work in Idaho’s Treasure Valley, created using pre-approved paint supplied by Rodda Paint, located at 307 E Fairview Ave, in Meridian. Selected artists/artist groups will be required to pay an entry fee of $25 to the MDBA in order to hold their place in the event and cover some of the paint cost, including the cost of primer which will be applied in advance.


An artist wishing to submit proposal for inclusion in Art on the Street must provide the following materials and information to MDBA in order to be considered for inclusion in Art on the Street: * Completed, signed Art on the Street Application & Acknowledgements form; * A check for $25; and * Drawings or digital renderings of up to two (2) proposed two-dimensional, original artworks to be painted on the roadway in one 4’ x 9’ section. Please ensure that this ratio is reflected in the depiction of the proposed artwork(s). If more than two (2) artworks are proposed per artist (or artist group), the proposal will be deemed ineligible and will not be considered. This call shall be open until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2017.


The selection of art for inclusion in the Art on the Street program will be made by MDBA members and their selected panel members. The MDBA will jury submissions by August 11, 2017. MDBA will notify selectees by email. Proposed artwork that includes text will be deemed ineligible and will not be considered. In evaluating eligible proposals, the following factors will be considered: * Quality of work; * Appropriateness of subject and concept for a public space; * Consistency with community values; and * Contribution to aesthetic and cultural atmosphere of downtown Meridian. Artwork will be deemed ineligible for installation which includes or portrays: text, content which violates copyright or other known legal ownership interest, profanity, obscenity, indecency, violence, pornography; discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, age, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality; or defamation or personal attacks.
